Accommodations and Lifestyle Changes presented by CFEE
March 11, 2026 (10:00 AM - 11:30 AM) (CDT)
Description
Housing and lifestyle decisions are a major part of retirement planning. We’ll start by outlining the spectrum of senior housing options—from staying in your own home with in-home assistance to living with family, joining a retirement community or moving into a care home. Participants will learn that the cost of housing generally increases with the level of service. We’ll discuss the financial and emotional considerations of each option and highlight programs and subsidies available to low-income seniors. We’ll also dive into “aging in place.” The session will cover how to adapt your home for safety—adding grab bars, improving lighting, or modifying entryways—and note that some provinces offer tax credits or grants for these renovations. We’ll reference guidance that urges seniors to review their current home and community to decide whether modifications or a future move will best meet their needs. Participants will get tips on comparing assisted living contracts (what services are included, transportation, complaint handling) and how to plan for the possibility of needing long-term care. The aim is to equip seniors with information to make housing and lifestyle choices that support independence, safety, and financial sustainability.
