Talking About Money with Your Family presented by CFEE
January 28, 2026 (10:00 AM - 11:30 AM) (CST)
Description
Money conversations are often avoided in families, yet openness builds trust and prevents future crises. We’ll explore why seniors should talk to adult children about their financial picture—assets, debts, wills, powers of attorney and end of life plans. The Canadian Foundation for Economic Education’s “Let’s Talk Money: Seniors” program notes that open conversations relieve stress, deepen connections and prepare adult children to assist when needed. The workshop will provide frameworks for initiating these discussions before a health crisis forces rushed decisions. We’ll offer practical tips: choose neutral, non-emotional settings; share goals and concerns; and involve all relevant family members to avoid later disputes. We’ll address sensitive topics such as inheritance expectations, living arrangements, and the potential need for financial help for grandchildren. The session will also encourage participants to listen to their children’s financial worries, making the conversation a dialogue rather than a lecture. By normalizing money discussions, families can align expectations, avoid misunderstandings and ensure that seniors’ wishes are respected. The workshop will include an overview of some of the free resources we have available for supporting plans and discussions around money, and how you can use them for yourself, and your loved ones.
